MOBIL is “the world’s largest publicly traded international oil and gas company.” For my logo animation, I wanted to focus on its gas station chain through the use of a fuel gauge. It shows as empty and as it starts to fill up with a red bar, it quickly transforms into the iconic red “o” of the logo.

Role: Art Director

It's always exciting when I get to art direct a spot that lets the team play in the sandbox and get artsy with it and this one hit just the spot. Covered California came to Scholar to create a campaign that would spread awareness that health insurance is not a daunting thing and can be easily be obtained through them, no matter one's income. And what's the most approachable way of learning about something? A conversation with a friend.
The entire campaign revolves around 2 friends talking about Covered California with it extending across multiple languages: English, Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese, and Korean. We used 3 different pairs of friends to ensure diversity and representation for the various languages and used the same story structure across for a streamlined process.
Not only did we get to play in a beautiful painterly style, but we also got to flex our stop motion muscles to create a stylized animation to bring still images of the friends to life. It all came together to create an inviting and eye-catching campaign that's been broadcasted across the web and TV's of Californians.

Streamlined Design

Considering we had 6 languages to create (English, Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean, and Vietnamese), we had to approach the way we built our scenes smartly. Working on the English spots first, we established the number of shots and the composition of each. Using it as the guide, we were able to rework the designs and swap in new talent and text for the other languages, helping us also retain the animation we had done for the environments and text.
